Representation of gender using Mise En Scene
What is Mise-En-Scene?
Mise-En-Scene is
basically everything inside the frame, or as its commonly described as
'putting things in the picture'. Its how everything is put together
Mise-en-scene includes clothing, background, props, cast, decoration,
even the placing on stage. Everything you see is Mise-en-scene. Every
aspect of the act or play is there for a reason. Mise-En-Scene also
includes lighting. There are two main types of lighting, low-key and
high-key. The low-key lighting is mostly used for thrillers and horror
movies, which contain allot of shadow, low-dull lighting. This creates
more dept of the image. Then there's high-key. This includes the frame
with hardly any lighting, pretty much no shadows and tension-less.
Merlin; Representation of Gender
In this section i will
talk about the representation of the female and male gender in the TV
show 'Merlin'. As i mentioned before 'Every aspect of the act or play is
there for a reason'. First of all, i am going to start on the
representation of Male's in Merlin. The two young men are fighting, they
are shown to look strong, noble and courage-full. The chain-mail is
used to show that they are not easily killed, they are strong. Then if
you look at the main character sitting on the bench, without no armor
protection. This shows that he is at a lower stage then the fighters.
Moving on, when the individuals get to the room, you notice that the
young fighter is wearing all red, which back in that decade was a royal
color along with the color blue. That shows that the young guy is also
high in rank rather then just strength. The main character had all
dull color like brown on, which were easily accessible back in them
days. however, he has a red scarf around his neck, which shows he is
property of royal blood.
Moving on, the first women we come across in this episode are seen as old hags. They are standing around some ritual of some sort. Clearly represented as witches, evil and dark entities. They are all wearing the the same clothing, grey robes which their faces covered to show anonymity. The dark colors of the robes convey that they are part of the cave, anywhere else and they would look out of place.
